If you think today is an ordinary day in quarantine, think again.
Today will (literally) go down in history and we’ve got a choice to make; Will we watch or will we follow?
Jesus called 12 guys to follow Him on an ordinary work day. Their reaction? They dropped everything and followed Him immediately. No question. And this has always, always captivated me. Honestly, the amount of things I have to line up in my life to be able to even take a week of vacation is crazy. It would be easier just to watch from afar because today doesn't seem to hold anything extraordinary.
But, my life is supposed to look like this, you know; following Jesus instead of watching from the sidelines. When Jesus called His 12 disciples, He wasn’t finished calling His people to drop everything and follow Him. It’s our turn. We’re up.
But how do we apply leaving everything to follow Him in today’s context, especially in quarantine?
We have to see what the disciples saw; Jesus didn’t come to patch up the old, broken ways. He came to make all things NEW (Luke 5:33-39) The reality is that we are insanely privileged NEW people if we know Jesus. No more living like we’re broken hand-me-downs. So we have work that we can do now; heart work, connecting with Jesus and with others. We have to lay down the things that keep us from Him. We know what they are.
Today, we get to do what the disciples did; follow Him. Same call, different century. You’re called right now to this story, to inspire generations to follow Jesus, too.
This means letting go of dreams that don’t involve Him, letting go of plans that don’t pursue Him, letting go of things that don’t include Him, and being willing to embrace the interruptions that God brings to us (people, serving, praying, sharing Jesus, etc). It’s our job to avoid getting too comfortable. We are His disciples, not His distant acquaintances.
It’s not an ordinary day. And in Jesus, you can’t be ordinary if you tried, You’ve got the light in you. The disciples got a brief moment in time with Jesus, and we get Him too.
So follow Him. Today is going down in history.
With Love, Em
Emily! This! Yes yes yes! This is no surprise to our Lord! I want to be the one that let’s go and let him do his work no matter how hard it feels!
